Conrad Tremblay (Denis Trudel), an unhappily married gravedigger, falls passionately in love with Madeleine (Hélène Florent), a manipulative hooker dreaming of a better life. While in the throes of desire, Conrad is at the same time confronted with a piercing moral dilemma when he learns that Madeleine and a “friend” are planning to kidnap a young girl from an upstanding family.

Loosely based around a true story that shook up Quebec, La Lâcheté recounts how this man, who could have lived a peaceful life, slowly sinks into insanity because of his lack of courage at a time when it counted and the remorse that overwhelmed him afterwards.
